The kids had a week off school and I got to escape for 2 nights to Lisbon to visit a friend! That's the second time in 8 years that I've had 100% kid-free time for more than 24 hours in a row! I need to get out more. lol
Compared to where I live in Spain, I noticed it was more colorful, many buildings were covered in tile, and it had a lot more graffiti.
Sounds romantic, doesn't it!? Our closest neighbors are 1km away, on either side.

This blog post is just to share a little piece of that with you.

Our lands is only a 1/4 of an acre, but it's in the midst of a huge protected nature reserve. We aren't allowed to build anything larger than a 16 square foot cabin - technically it is just supposed to be a tool shed for our gardening tools. My husband starting building it 4 years ago, and it's still in process. I guess we all get too distracted just enjoying nature to actually do any work while we're there!
My favourite thing about being there is probably that my kids just happily play for hours, without fighting. My next favourite thing is witnessing the daily walk of the goats from our neighbours campo ("farm" in Spanish). They have about 100 goats who roam down the mountain and pass by our property at about 5pm every day. You can hear them coming because many of them have bells on. As they run down the mountain towards our land, my children yell "the goats are coming!" and we all go down to the river to watch them come take a drink. It's so peaceful words cannot describe it. Just to sit there and hear no noise from other humans or machines or traffic... just the bells from the goats. We usually sit there silently for several minutes watching them (sometimes taking photos, of course).

I have too many photos to put them all in one blog post, so I'll just choose a few for this time and save the rest for later.
It's always exciting to go there because the land changes so much with the seasons. In spring it's very green and lush, but by the end of summer it's all dry and brown except for the cactus.
My husband would like to move here full time. Even though I love it when we come here, I think I'd miss our apartment in the city with all the modern conveniences like running hot water and a flush toilet! But hey, you never know what life will bring. If you'd asked me 10 years ago if I would ever leave Canada, I would have said "no way!" and now look!

Well, that's all for now folks. Thanks for reading....

Let me break down how to decide what to wear...

Most importantly, you want your clothes to fit you well and be flattering to your body shape. Second to that is being coordinated to the others in your group.

So how do you do this? Here are some tips!

• Wear mostly solid coloured clothing so that we see all of your faces and no one stands out from the others. Big prints or patterns will make you stand out from the rest of your family, as do bright colours.
• Choose similar tones (all dark tones or all light tones) for everyone. Darks and lights together create contrast and distract from the important things, your faces!
• Choose 1-3 colours for your group portrait. Pick a few colours (with similar tones, see above point!) that go nicely together and have everyone work within that colour palette. Don’t worry about “matching” each other… just think “looks nice together”. We want to see the people first and not your clothing.
• Consider your location/background when you choose your colours. Are you getting portraits done on the beach (blue tones) or out in nature with green/browns behind you? In the city? At night?
• Textures are good, use bright colors only for accents. Sweaters or scarves and other textured clothing is great. Use bright colors for small accents (if you wish to use them at all) but not for whole outfits.
• Bare skin attracts the eye. To reduce attention to arms and legs, cover them to the elbow/knee with clothing. (*Tops with sleeves, skirts to the knee or below). This is not super important, but can be helpful for those who are a little self conscious of their arms or legs. It also makes it easier for ladies to sit in various positions if not worrying about a short skirt.
• Choose dark socks and shoes (unless it’s a barefoot photo on the beach) because white draws attention to it and your socks shouldn’t be the focus of your portrait!
• Do your hair the way you’d normally do it while wearing these clothes – no fancy up dos with jeans, no pony tails with evening gowns, etc. The best portraits will reflect who you are and bring out your best… You’ll like the photos better if they look like you.

Thee best time of day is what photographers call the "golden hour" which is the hour before sunset. A common misconception is that we are trying to include a sunset in your photos... this is not the case. (If we wanted a sunset, we'd do the shoot at or just after sunset.) What we're after is the sunlight being softer, warmer and lower to the horizon. We can control the photos better when the sun only comes from one direction, rather than from straight above where we can't get away from it no matter which way we turn.

Here are some photos I took of my kids during the golden hour.
Strong shadows and high contrast

As you can see, these are ok... but not nearly as impressive as the first set, right?

So what do we do if we can't take photos during the golden hour?

All is not lost! We can still do photos at other times of the day if we look for shade and pay close attention to which way we are facing, as to minimize the shadows.

Here is an example of a photo taken in full shade, during a sunny day.

You don't get the warm glow as you do during golden hour, but you also don't get the harsh shadows from being in the sun. Not too bad, eh?!

Regarding the weather:

A cloudy or overcast day is not a bad thing! In fact, I'd rather shoot on a cloudy day than a sunny one. The clouds act like big soft diffusers and the light is similar to the golden hour... so we can shoot at any time of day and have nice soft light, minus the golden color. (See photo below!)

I mention this because I've had people postpone their photo shoots because it was too cloudy and they wanted photos on a sunny day. :)

I hope that helps you decide if it's worth it to you to keep your kids up late for the "golden hour". ;)

To calculate what time that will be (since it changes of course) you can use this website http://www.golden-hour.com/ or just ask me!

As always, I'm available by email if you have any questions!

The reason I say this is because property doesn't move. You don't have to capture it at the exact right second to get the perfect expression. It doesn't matter if you take the photo tomorrow, or today... besides the weather conditions, it could turn out exactly the same!

You do need to know what you're doing however, because Real Estate photography has a few other challenges that portraits don't have. For example, in most cases you want to show your viewer what the room looks like from inside AND what the view looks like out the window! In other words, you need to know how to create an image that balances both the indoor light with the outside light. And that's almost impossible in a single shot. To do it, we have to use multiple images.

The process is slower than most people think. I use a tripod and take anywhere from 3 to 7 pictures for each final photo that I want to have. Then I merge them to what's called a high dynamic range (HDR) image using the computer afterwards. So, although the session itself is more predictable and "easy", the work to merge the photos is more tedious and takes more skill than with other editing.

Here's an image created from 3 images:

This process isn't necessary for all real estate photos of course, only the ones where you want to show the outside as well as the inside.

Sometimes, the view outside isn't attractive and it's better to just show the room, and leave the window looking bright.

In a bathroom for example, you don't want to think that people are going to be looking in the window at you, so it's better not to make it look crystal clear.. which is also why bathroom windows are often frosted!

Here is a final image created for an 11x14 print, where I removed people to create a shot this couple wanted of just the two of them.

Original image below: This was a group shot, and landscape orientation... I cropped in for an 11x14 print, and people were removed.

While this is something that can be done if needed, it's rarely what I actually use Photoshop for.

Personally, I like to use Photoshop to clean up an image... meaning I like to remove little bits of color, light or debris that catches the eye and takes away from the subject matter. My own style is simple and clean, but not over-the-top or unrealistic. Below are some examples of images which I have used Photoshop.

Other examples with Photoshop:

So do I do this on all photos? - No! I rarely use Photoshop unless I am asked by the client for something specific, or in the case of weddings, I retouch the photos that go into the album.

What I do do, is process the images from raw to JPG, which is a different thing altogether, and is done on every single photo from your session.

Here's a quick explanation of the difference.

Post-processing is the necessary conversion of raw (camera) data into JPGs. Before this is done, the image is in a proprietary format, which can't be opened or viewed with most consumer programs, nor online, or in a browser. These edits are technical in nature and generally affect the whole image. Once finished, a JPG image is exported, which can be viewed with most programs/devices. (Read more my post on processing raw photos here.)

Photoshop is (usually) artistic in nature and affects the subject matter of the image, or just a certain area of the image. When I decide to use Photoshop on an image, it's always after I've done the post processing, and want to take the image a step further for artistic reasons. About 20% of the images you see on my website have been through a round of Photoshop. Mostly though, I prefer to keep things natural and don't have the need for this additional retouching.

And now for some examples:

Some examples of post-processing are:

changing the color balance of a photo (making the white areas look white and not yellowish for example)

increasing the contrast or brightness

adding more color to a certain thing, or adding overall saturation

deepening the overexposed areas

brightening shadows

(Sample "Before and After" post-processing can be seen on this blog post.)

So, now for Photoshop..

Some examples of what we can do with Photoshop are:

removing flyaway hairs

clearing skin blemishes

fixing a shadow that looks weird

removing distracting things from the background

adding or removing things/people from a photo

changing the color of something

and almost anything else you can dream up!

To summarize, I process and export all photos from raw to JPG (from each photo session). During this time, I make technical and artistic adjustments to color, brightness, saturation etc. Once this is done, you can see the images in a gallery online. Then, if needed we discuss any retouching to the subject matter, such as those things listed above.

Just a quick post to share with you my family bike ride about three weeks ago... It was the first time I'd actually been up this hill (which my husband has been going up for about 3 years~!) I can't believe I've been missing out... it was SO pretty up here.

Brought the kids, and took all these pictures with my cell phone... didn't want to carry the big camera on the bike! This is when it's awesome to live in Spain.... Sunny and warm in November. (But I'm posting this now because it's actually been cold and rainy this week and I don't want to go outside!)
So as I sit here in November, still in my t-shirt and sandals, I'm thankful for living in such a beautiful place with a climate that allows the "wedding season" to extend far into October. Alas, it is finally over now... the weather calls for showers today! And, I've got no more weddings booked until next year... which will be my 10th year! Wow, time flies!

When I first started shooting weddings professionally in 2007, about a quarter (to a third) of the guests brought their camera with them. (This is based on my visual estimation!) And, I'm referring to a BIG camera, like mine. Some were even bigger and more expensive than mine was... and I'll tell you, that was a little intimidating especially when I was just starting out! We all know photography is more than just a good camera, but I often doubted myself and thought: why did they even hire me? Look at all their friends with nice cameras! Never-the-less I kept shooting and delivering my work to the best of my ability.

I thought this trend would increase, and I'd be competing against bigger and faster cameras... but a funny thing has happened... today, when I go to a wedding, almost NO ONE brings a camera! Ok, there might be one or two people who bring a big DSLR, but that's it. The rest - you guessed it - have their cell phone in hand. While this is of course way less intimidating, it's also way more distracting to the wedding because now guests are taking pictures almost constantly! They interfere with the natural flow of the event by asking the bride and groom to look at them, and they themselves cannot be captured in the moment because they are too busy taking photos.

Weddings are a big responsibility to capture. The emotions, ceremonies and details definitely provide plenty of subject matter without intruding or asking the couple to pose. The question then arises, how do we capture those moments without getting in the way?

Let me offer my 4 tips for capturing the moment, without interfering:

1. Stay out of sight (and earshot!) during the ceremony.

If you're a guest, this tip isn't really for you because you'll usually be in a seat... (but do be mindful of the hired photographer if you get up to take photos.) As a photographer, you should try to stay back and zoom in to the action with your lens. During a church ceremony, the click of your shutter can actually be quite intrusive as well! So this another reason to stand behind the guests and not up front. There are a few moments that you will want to move to the front to make sure you get a good angle, like the ring exchange, but for the majority of the time just stay far enough back that you aren't blocking the guests view. If you do stand in front of someone to get a shot, just move out of the way as quickly as you can.

2. Take a LOT of photos; edit out the bad ones.

Anyone wishing to capture "the" moment has to know that it can happen at any time and isn't predictable. From one split second to the next you may go from an award-winning shot to something completely unusable if the expression is different or someone steps in front of you. The way I have pulled off some of the most amazing photos has been by shooting very quick sequences when something important is happening. Cell phones have a shutter delay and can't do this... this is where a pro camera will outperform. (Side note: I'm super excited to find out more about the new camera Light coming on the market soon. It's a point-and-shoot size camera with 16 mini lenses that claims to capture the quality of a 52 megapixel DSLR. It could be a perfect solution for guests, and maybe even the pros... My assumption is that it will be quiet, high quality and offer continuous shooting... wouldn't that be a dream come true! I'll keep you posted if I get my hands on one!)

3. Know the inner workings of the wedding.

This has everything to do with preparation and nothing to do with your gear. The more you know about the event schedule, the parts of the wedding ceremony and the order things are going to happen, the better you can anticipate what's to come and the more likely you'll be in the right place at the right time to capture that perfect moment. If you are a new photographer, be sure to ask your couple for a copy of the ceremony schedule so you can know what to expect.

4. Encourage moments to happen, but don't force them.

As a photographer or guest, you can get some great photos by encouraging the couple to DO something, rather than pose for you. (I'm only suggesting this outside the actual wedding ceremony, not during!) Many bridal portraits that seem candid had some element of planning to them. For example, you could ask a couple to walk towards a particular spot, kiss each other, and then walk back to you. That way, you aren't actually posing them in such a way that looks awkward or unnatural. They will carry out the instructions on their own, in their own way, and you can take photos while they do it. In the photo above, I asked the bride to stand right next to me so that the groom could look at her while I took his portrait. They started exchanging some funny comments! This was much more fun (and natural) than just looking at a camera, and the shots are way better!

Of course there are many more things to know when shooting a wedding, such as the technical aspects of your camera, composition and lighting, but for now we are talking about staying out of the way while still being close enough to get the shots. I hope this has been helpful...
Thank you Saal-Digital!

When I first opened the package and saw the album, the cover was beautiful. I chose the matte paper cover, and it felt soft and silky in my hands and my first impression was very good. I would choose this option again, as I didn't like the color choices for the faux leather covers.

It's a thin page book, with real photo paper inside. I chose the glossy paper. It does (more or less) lay flat.

Also, they have my favourite size, 10 x 10 inches (or for those using cm, it's 28cm x 28cm)... so that's a real plus for me. Most companies offering this style of book only have smaller squares; either 7 or 8 inches or 12 inches... but no middle size!

The glossy paper is quite shiny and looks good. (And without texture like the lustre paper which I usually use from another company.)

So far so good... right?

Now about the color:

Although the overall book is beautiful and appears to be well made for this price point, I noticed right away that the colors were not as saturated as I'd like them to be. They looked dull compared to my monitor. (To be fair, prints are always a little more dull than on a monitor because they are made of ink and paper rather than light!) That said, I still feel like they could have been more colorful.

I had a few of the same photos printed at home already, so I compared side-by-side to see if my hunch was right... here's the comparison:
So, as you can see I'm a tad bit fussy about color. :) I do like the book, and considering it's a LOT cheaper than the other pro books I offer to clients, I think it will appeal to certain types of shoots, like family sessions or anniversaries.

I made this book with photos from a trip to Mexico and the USA. The book is just fine for this purpose, and I'm quite happy with it. But for a wedding, I'm not convinced. I'd rather pay more and get the additional service of someone (not a machine) actually looking at my prints to make sure they turn out perfectly. Side note, I have to admit that I didn't download their ICC color profile before sending the prints. I just sent jpgs in sRGB color space, which is what they recommended. Perhaps their color profile was slightly different and I could have seen that on my monitor ahead of time. Never the less, the photos I sent were exactly how I normally send prints to the other pro labs, so I did expect that they would turn out just as well. I was wrong!

In conclusion, would I order a book from them again? Absolutely. I have one in the works right now which is going to be Christmas gifts for my family! The whole process from ordering to printing and shipping was very fast. A matter of days instead of weeks... Next time though, I will bump up the saturation more than normal before I send the prints in!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2154183831598978951.post-90696637081437655082017-02-17T04:00:00.000-08:002019-03-24T02:06:54.697-07:00What is post-processing of raw photos? Are you wondering why a photographer has to edit your photos? Like, why can't they just download them from the camera and then send them, right?

Well, I'm here to explain what the heck we do in post-processing and why it takes so long to deliver your photos after your session!

First off, we shoot in raw (sometimes referred to as "RAW"), not JPG. That means that when we download the images from the camera, we download them in an uncompressed, lossless format. This format is unreadable by most software programs except for those specifically designed to process it. The advantage is that the image files contain all of the data that the camera captured, and all the possible options for a final image. This allows the photographer greater flexibility and control and therefore provide a final image in the highest possible quality.

Choosing to download raw instead of jpg from my camera is an intentional extra step that most photographers go through. Normally, converting the file would be the job of the (digital) camera. It takes a photo, and creates an image using algorithms and software programming. Sometimes allowing you to add filters or special effects, as in the case with most cell phone "cameras" today. What you get in the end is a JPG. What I get is the step BEFORE that!

So, not only can I make adjustments to color, brightness, contrast, etc, I actually must make these adjustments before I can send you the photos because they are not readable (by web browsers, cell phones etc) until I do.

Here's what it looks like when I'm processing photos from raw to jpg:

I take the time to look at and adjust each photo individually. I preview the changes in real time as I make them... Everything comes out of the camera set at "null" and I need to give it a value. Some examples of things I need to set are Highlights, Shadows, Whites, Blacks, Clarity, Contrast, Temperature, Tint, and as needed, all the individual color channels. A properly converted raw photo will have better depth than nearly all JPGs captured in camera.

Here are some more examples of what the raw photo looked like right out of camera, and what it looks like after I've adjusted the settings how I wanted them.
Besides needing to convert all your photos from raw to JPG, photographers need to sort through and delete a fair number of "throw-away" images. There will inevitably be shots when people don't know their photo is being taken, they may look away at the wrong moment, make a weird face, blink, or someone may step in front of me...etc. etc. This is even more so the case with candid photos. But the beauty of shooting this way is that the keepers are genuine moments and real smiles and are all the more beautiful for it! So... I must go through hundreds (in the case of weddings, sometimes thousands), of images to pull out the very best.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2154183831598978951.post-13849414538976793772015-10-27T06:30:00.001-07:002017-02-10T04:36:14.604-08:00Three Reasons You Need To Print your Photos!Today nearly everyone has a smart phone on them at all times. Millions photos get taken every day.... Yet, hardly any are being printed compared to just 10 years ago.

So what, you ask?

Reason #1: So they don't get lost to the latest digital technology...

Fast forward 50 or 100 years when our hard drives, USB sticks, and computers have all changed. People wont be able to look back at history like we can now.... Consider this: How many photos do you have from 5 years ago still on your phone? What about on your computer?

We don't have VHS anymore, hardly ever use floppies, if at all, and CDs are disappearing. Now we have usb sticks, but that will probably change soon too. Computers will read some other type of media in the future, won't they?

If we aren't careful, there won't be any photos for historians to look back at because most will not have been kept updated on the latest digital technology...

Reason #2: So your kids and grandkids can see who you were.

Most of us cherish old family photos from the 1900s (at least in my family we do), but what will happen in 2050? Or even 2025? Will you have any from today to show them?

You think your photos aren't that good/that important... so it doesn't really matter. Let me ask you this: Were the photos that good that people took 100 years ago? Not really. We still love to look at them, right? We still like to see what people were wearing, what kinds of things they had and who our ancestors were.

Let's just make it simple for our loved ones and print our important photos now, before it's too late or we lose them!

Reason #3: So you can enjoy them!

Printed photos hanging on your walls or in an album are looked at more often and enjoyed compared to than those buried away in folders on your computer.

Plus, what if your hard drive crashes? It does happen and people lose photos every day. If you have your favourite ones printed, they won't be lost forever.

In my experience, both in Canada and in Spain, consumer "1-hour" print labs just don't measure up to their professional counterparts.

As you probably noticed, you can purchase prints through my website. When you do so, they are printed by carefully selected professional labs with excellent color reproduction and solid reputations, chosen by a team of experts and LOTS of tests. (There are two in the USA and one in the UK. I will link your client gallery to the lab which is closer to you.)

I personally tested them out too and see if there was actually a difference compared to my local 1-hour lab. Here are some examples of the prints I got back.

I sent the exact same image to various 1-hour labs in my town. (Including London Drugs and one-off mom and pop shops.) The results of all the labs varied greatly in both color, quality and consistency. That is to say, that I did the same thing twice, and got a differently colored image the second time around from the same store! But not from the pro labs connected to my website... phew.

A few more examples:

Regarding 4 above: the two on the right are cropped! Look how close their heads are to the edge of the print. That's not how I sent it to them. Also notice the color is different between the top and bottom (right side). It's most noticeable in the color of the trees. Not only is the color off and the cropping too much, it was inconsistent. The prints are different, printed from the same file at the same lab! The left two are correct, which were sent to the pro lab on two occasions, and came back the same both times. (And that's how it should be!)

And another example:

Above, the center image was from my partnered lab and the two outside images were from local 1-hour places. These are just a few examples I photographed to put online. I actually did several more test prints and the color differences were quite surprising!

Conclusion:

Professional labs are consistently better in terms of color accuracy, sharpness and paper quality.

One-hour consumer labs can provide good results sometimes, but not reliably.

If you are printing something important, like a large image to hang above your fireplace and enjoy for years to come, it's worth printing through a professional lab so as not to be disappointed in an image that looks slightly "off" or muddy (IMO)

Lastly, your screen (computer, cell phone etc) may also render the colors differently! So, the images above may not look the same to you as they are intended!!

Thanks for reading!
Peace out! ;PUnknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2154183831598978951.post-65439316017343580892013-10-04T08:30:00.002-07:002016-09-24T05:48:32.140-07:00How to Photograph Flowers (in Black and White)When I was thinking of a topic for this post, I came across an article saying that one of the most commonly photographed subjects are flowers. I did a little research (ok, just Google’s keyword tool) and it seems that’s probably true. Especially for hobbyists and aspiring photographers, flowers are a likely place to start. So, I couldn’t help but think why.

Flowers often make easy subjects because of their beauty and color. When we see them, many of us just want to take a picture right away. But on the other hand, we can easily rely too much on the flower itself “making” the photo and overlook other important elements, like lighting and good composition. This is why you’ve probably seen thousands of boring flower photos and only a small selection that really stick in your mind or stand out.

When you try to photograph a flower in black and white, it forces you to see it in a new way, beyond just its pretty color. Hopefully, the techniques below help you focus on the other reasons you are taking the photo, and really create a picture with interest. Even if you’re not shooting flowers in black and white, these tips will help you with your color photos too!

Three essential tips for getting great flower photos in black and white:

1. Minimize what’s in your photo

Try to remove everything from the frame that isn’t absolutely necessary to the shot. Meaning, anything that isn’t adding to the image or the overall feeling you are trying to achieve, get rid of it. Even other flowers could be distracting.

If the photo still isn’t working, try to:

Get closer to the flower

Select only one flower, rather than several in your shot

Crop into a particular area of interest, not the entire flower

Go for details or patterns only

2. Find contrast between the flower and background

Look for tonal range (areas of dark and light) rather than differences in color. For instance, red and green are very different colors, but look almost exactly the same in black and white. Make your subject stand out by being different than your background in tone and texture. Zooming in more blurs out the background, giving it a softer focus and therefore a difference in texture.

3. Work with what you have

Don’t’ give up just because you don’t have the “right” lighting or “perfect” weather. There is almost always a way to create something, even if it’s not what you originally had in mind.
If you have wind, try going with it and creating something abstract using a slow shutter speed. Show the motion rather than trying to stop it. If you have bright sun, you can make a silhouette or shoot through the flower. (Avoid getting both sun and shade on the portion of the flower you are shooting.) If you have a dull or cloudy day, it’s great for opening up the aperture and getting a soft focus image.

First image below: slow shutter image on a windy day. Second image: Shooting with light coming through the leaves. Third one: soft focus and wide aperture on an overcast day.

Recap:
It’s not all about your gear. Many compact cameras can focus closer than expensive DSLR lenses and get great macro shots. Also, you can try going farther away and zooming in on the flower in order to separate it from the background and create the soft focus look of an expensive close up lens. (Two of the photos in this post were shot with a point-and-shoot camera. Can you tell which ones???)

Most flower photos rely on color alone which can be boring if the composition isn't strong. Shooting black and white flowers forces you to think beyond just the color and look at the other aspects in the image, such as the lighting, the contrast, the composition the subject matter itself. That is not to say you can't take great color images of flowers... you can. It’s just harder to make them stand out because everyone has seen so many flower photos! Make sure you incorporate some other elements as well.

Does is always work? Black and white doesn't work well for photos with low tonal range, meaning colors that are similar in brightness. For example, a red flower against a green background will look very dull when converted to black and white because it will turn out all nearly the same shade of gray.
It also doesn’t work well for photos that are similar in texture or lacking patterns and details.
Below is an example of a photo that doesn't do as well in black and white,in my opinion. As you can see the color version is better. The yellow flowers stand out a little in grayscale, but it's much nicer to look at this shot in color, isn't it?
It´s only February, and I´m posting my second blog post! I´m dedicating the next few posts to useful tips on photography and how to look good in your photos.

Here are some simple tips to help you choose what to wear for your family photos or portrait session:

When picking out your clothing, choose something that is similar to each other in color and tone. If you
want to wear a light colored top with dark pants, make sure your partner/family also wears a light top
and dark pants and not vice versa.

All light colors (i.e. khaki pants and a beige top), or all dark colors (i.e. dark jeans and a brown shirt) work better than top and bottoms being dramatically different shades.

If you wear opposite colors on the top and bottom the clothes may be distracting and your family can turn out looking like a checker board!

Plain or very simply patterned items are better then detailed patterns. Also, avoid clothing with big logos or images, like a big mickey mouse face on your child´s shirt. It will be very distracting.

My new years resolution: at least 12 posts this year.

I'll start with a recent day trip to Tarifa with my mom. (And then I'm going to figure out a purpose for this blog and actually make posts that are about something useful... well, that's resolution #2. Let's see if I can get around to it!)

What a beautiful beach... probably pretty hard to take a bad photo here! Anyway, here are a couple of my favourite shots of the day.
To my untrained eye, they all looked pretty much the same. Picturesque yet empty, and sometimes resembling ghost towns.

Photo Life, Canada's largest photography magazine, recently published my photo "On top of the world" as their "poster" for the upcoming 2012 competition! I am honored, and to be honest, a little surprised, since I didn't even know they were considering it! (I was previously named in their Emerging Photographer of the Year contest with that image.)

This is a photo of Mt Cheam, in Chilliwack. I finally reached the top nearly at sunset, after hiking several hours... just as this trio of hikers arrived. I didn't know them, but after a series of photos in this awesome setting, I introduced myself and showed the images. This is one of my favorites. So happy to share it! And I would totally recommend a hike up to the top if you are in to that sort of thing. The view is spectacular. See previous post for more pictures of the hike.
I am just posting the photos now because Photo Life magazine has recently picked one as a winner in a contest. I wanted to share the others too...
The top of Mt Cheam (near Chilliwack) has spectacular views - especially on a clear day. We were lucky enough to have the perfect weather when we went on Sunday... warm enough, with just a touch of clouds to make for amazing photos.

Here are a few of my favorites.

We met some fun people at the top! I hope you don't mind me blogging about you guys! The shots were too awesome to keep to myself. Enjoy! :)

Sunset at the top of a mountain makes for neat silhouettes. Quality over Quantity. That's my goal - and I know it can be done. Let's face it, not every one can afford 8 or 10 hours, right? Why should you settle for a mediocre photographer just because you don't have a budget for an expensive all-day shoot?

This isn't for everyone of course. If you have a big event planned with a hundred people or more and it spans most of the day, well, you'd most likely want to capture it all. Nothing wrong with that. BUT... if you are having a smaller intimate wedding and all your important events will be said and done within a few hours, then let's chat! I'd love to hear from you.

(Of course, you would receive a DVD with the digital images, and have the ability to add on any hand-made album, canvas or prints that you want at the same great prices that larger packages previously had.)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2154183831598978951.post-65014119307405184882011-12-25T08:23:00.000-08:002011-12-25T08:36:18.038-08:00Merry Christmas!Wishing everyone Happy Holidays from España!

I will back in Canada soon, and will be available for 2012 weddings starting this spring and summer. I didn't know it until I went out that day, but it was the holiday Fiesta National. It seems that most women (some men) and nearly all the young girls dress up in fancy clothes, mostly flamenco style dresses. These two little girls were having a great time showing each other their dance moves on the stairs of the church.

For more photos from Spain, view my Spain Photo Gallery here.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
